Kardia Church Planting Initiative

Over 50 church planters from across the Carolinas gathered on June 1st for Plant and Grow, the first ever Kardia Church Planting Initiative training event in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. This was a powerful time of equipping and relationship building among church planters and their leadership teams.

Kardia Church Planting Initiative is a church planting and church revitalization ministry of the Diocese of the Carolinas that seeks to plant, remission, and resource healthy gospel-centered churches in the Anglican tradition. Kardia began in 2012, when Bishop Steve Wood called together a leadership team from the Diocese of the Carolinas to create a new church planting initiative. The team includes Canon Winfield Bevins, Rector of Church of the Outer Banks, North Carolina; John Hall, Church Planter in Greenville, South Carolina; and Robert Sturdy, Associate Pastor at St. Andrews Church Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.

Canon Winfield Bevins opened the conference with a session called, “The Who, What, and Why of Church Planting.” One of the essential points of Winfield’s talk was that the church planter must be called. Calling to ministry, especially the ministry of church planting can be a difficult thing to discern. One of our commitments at Kardia is to help those called to church planting discern and clarify their sense of calling.

Other presenters included, Todd Simonis, pastor of City Church in Charleston who shared about Developing Leaders in a Church Plant; Brian Morgan, small groups pastor at St. Andrews discussed Developing Small Groups; Tim Winkler of The Winkler Group and Matt Alexander of Palmetto Medical Initiative spoke about Finding and Handling Finances. These sessions addressed some of the practical issues that church planters face when planting a church.

Bishop Steve Wood closed out the event by speaking about being in ministry for the long term. He shared some valuable insights into ministry longevity which included ministry identity, having a long-term vision, and developing personal disciplines. Bishop Wood said, “You have to have a vision for long-term ministry – it’s contrary to the expected norm.”

imageIn addition to these workshops, the Kardia leadership team officially assessed three candidates for church planting. In the last six months, Kardia has received 12 applicants, initiated six new church plants, and established a strategic plan to plant a total of 30 new churches over the next three years.

Next Event
Kardia is planning their next event, REMISSION for January 2014 in Raleigh, North Carolina that will focus on issues relating to church health, mission, and outreach. This event will be helpful for both new and existing churches.
