Travel Digest: Kenya | May 2025

Children in a Samburu village in northern Kenya

“Like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be” Isaiah 65:22

Earlier this month Archbishop Steve Wood traveled with a small delegation of bishops to teach and minister alongside their Anglican brothers in Kenya and engage in outreach and evangelism within new communities. This trip originated from an invitation for Archbishop Wood to teach at the Kenyan College of Bishops and expanded to include other opportunities for ministry.  The delegation included Bishop Andrew Williams from the Anglican Diocese of New England (ADNE), Bishop Chris Warner from the Diocese of the Mid-Atlantic (DOMA), and Bishop Mark Engel from the Anglican Diocese of the Great Lakes (ADGL). Below are some highlights from the trip.

April 30- May 3 | Preaching, Training, and Confirmations in Maralal Diocese

Archbishop Wood first traveled to Kenya’s remote Samburu region with Canon Kindachu, witnessing the growing, Christ-centered mission among the Samburu people. He confirmed new believers and preached in several “tree churches,” where congregations gather under acacia trees in place of formal buildings. The visit highlighted the vibrant faith and evangelistic spirit thriving in one of Kenya’s most unreached communities.

May 4 | Preaching in Nairobi

On May 4 Archbishop Wood  was invited to preach at All-Saints Cathedral in Nairobi. The Archbishop preached on the power of the Resurrection. The full sermon can be found here.

May 5-9 | Teaching and Fellowship at the Kenyan House of Bishops Retreat in Athi River

Archbishop Wood, along with ACNA Bishops Andrew Williams, Chris Warner, and Mark Engel, joined the bishops of the Church of Kenya for a retreat in Maralal during the second week of his visit. The gathering focused on prayer, worship, and teachings by the ACNA bishops on Romans 12.2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

This is Archbishop Wood’s second trip to Africa since his investiture in October. In November he traveled to Nigeria with Bishop Julian Dobbs of the Diocese of the Living Word. A summary of this trip can be found as part of the Archbishop’s Provincial Letter.
