Rector

Nazareth Reformed Episcopal Church is searching for a new full-time rector/pastor. Nazareth stands proudly as the oldest or “Mother Church” of the Reformed Episcopal Church in South Carolina. We are the oldest congregation in the Southeast Diocese of the Reformed Episcopal Church. This congregation was established in 1875. Her children have made, and are making, their impression on the community as good citizens. Many have found their way into honorable professions: law, medicine, engineering, law enforcement, business, education, and the military. We are a family-oriented and prayerful church that aligns with the Reformed Episcopal order of service, yet we embrace additional liturgical resources that elevate the worship focus for the occasion. We are under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of the Southeast. We consistently use the Reformed Episcopal Book of Common Prayer and observe the Christian Church Year. We are a resilient congregation searching for a pastor who will embrace us spiritually and care for the concerns of the youngest to the eldest member, while guiding us to the next level God has called and prepared for Nazareth.

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY AND EXPECTATION

The chosen rector shall serve as the chief under shepherd and overseer of this local church, feeding, leading, and nurturing the sheep. This person’s main responsibilities will be to communicate God’s Word, minister to spiritual needs, and provide biblical leadership for the church. Other expectations include:

Position Is Paid Staff
Position May be filled by:
▪ Reformed Episcopal Seminary Graduate and Ordained Presbyter
▪ Preferences include a college degree and 5 – 10 years pastoral experience; however, open to a recent seminary graduate and ordained Presbyter

Responsibilities/ Duties

1. Oversee pastoral staff

2. Provide leadership and vision for the church – including the Vestry and leadership development. Direct plans for ministry and church growth, develop and fine-tune the church structure.

3. Sunday worship service – including Sunday School and seasonal services

4. Bible Study

5. Available for office hours 1 day per week (designated hours)

6. Participate in meetings/training: one hour minimum a week

7. Motivate, equip, and nurture the people of the church through example, preaching and teaching God’s Word and spiritual counseling.

8. Spend significant time in prayer and Bible study.

9. Make pastoral calls/visits on people in hospitals, nursing homes, at home, and those grieving

10. Officiate at weddings and funerals.

11. Provide premarital counseling, counseling regarding salvation and spiritual issues and other counseling for church members as time permits.

12. Perform sacraments of Holy Communion and Holy Baptism.

13. Oversee church discipline and manage conflict in the church. Seek to reconcile relationships and promote unity within the church.

14. Participate in evangelism efforts through preaching and giving invitations during worship services, revival or other special services, visitation, and other outreach efforts.

Compensation

Salary is dependent on experience.

Strengths and Challenges

Nazareth’s strengths are its faithful congregation, financial stability, spiritually solid Sunday School teachers, and strong in prayer. Nazareth challenges are Sunday School attendance, Bible and prayer service attendance, youth involvement, and community involvement. Another strength is its geographic location; Nazareth is located within the heart of Berkeley County near the lakes of Santee Cooper for fishing and nearby wildlife for hunting also, located approximately 30 miles northwest of historic Charleston, South Carolina.
