We exist to celebrate and proclaim the good news of the gospel

About Truro and Our Approach to Worship
Located in Fairfax, VA (20 miles west of Washington D.C.), Truro Anglican Church is a vibrant and growing congregation, committed to the four pillars of the Word, worship, outreach, and community. Situated on busy Main Street, and surrounded by neighborhoods, new construction, and George Mason University, we exist to celebrate and proclaim the good news of the gospel. Our services follow the liturgy of the 2019 Book of Common Prayer, with heartfelt congregational singing, utilizing a convergence of musical styles from ancient to modern, helping us all focus on Jesus, by the power of the Spirit.

Position Description
The Director of Worship, in partnership with the Rector, provides spiritual shepherding, pastoral care, Biblical leadership, and gospel-centered ministry to the flock of Truro Anglican Church. With the heart of a pastor, the Director of Worship will help guide Truro forward towards the goals of restoration, rebuilding, and raising up the saints for the work of ministry, with a particular focus on Truro’s foundational pillar of worship. This person will give primary spiritual oversight to our worship ministry staff and volunteers, helping to oversee all aspects of our church’s worship life and weekly services.

Duties and Responsibilities
This position will focus on the two crucial components of rebuilding our worship and arts ministry, and cultivating a healthy culture of worship in our church. First, on service planning, music selection/arranging, rehearsals, and worship leading. Second, on staff/volunteer oversight, recruitment, and pastoral care. With the support of the Rector, this individual will ensure that the vision of the church is implemented at every level of the worship ministry, maintaining theological, musical, and pastoral consistency.

The Director of Worship will oversee all of Truro’s worship life, including:

  • The Choir
If the Director is skilled in choral conducting, he or she will give significant attention to rebuilding our choir. If this is not the Director’s primary skill, he or she will oversee an eventual associate, hired to direct and rebuild the choir.
  • Worship Team
The Director will oversee our volunteer and/or paid musicians (strings, woodwinds, percussion, guitars, and organ), and recruit/audition additional musicians.
  • Audiovisual
The Director will manage the audio engineer, video producer, and lyric projectionist, ensuring excellence in the technical aspects of our in-person and online services.
  • The Arts
Truro has a long tradition of utilizing different elements of the arts in our life together, throughout the year, under the guidance of the Director of Worship. Some of these elements are brought into our worship services (i.e. dance, art, special musical offerings), or others are offered at different times (i.e. concerts, recitals, art shows).
  • Special events and ministries
    1. The Director of Worship will oversee music for special events and services on occasions such as Holy Week, Advent, Christmas, funerals, weddings, and men’s and women’s retreats.
    2. Depending on his or her background and experience, the Director may be asked to give guidance to some of the following liturgical ministries: acolytes, altar guild, flower guild, and/or lay eucharistic ministers.
  • Administrative support
A large worship program requires excellent administration behind-the-scenes, to execute Sunday services with excellence. The Director (and his or her team) will oversee administrative details such as music packets, ProPresenter slides, Planning Center outlines, worship guides for the 7:45 AM services, check requests for paid musicians, room reservations, instrument maintenance and tuning, organization of worship and storage spaces, and long-range planning.

This individual will establish annual goals in consultation with the rector, and will manage the Worship budget. He or she will attend a weekly staff meeting, and bi-weekly meetings with the rector and other ministry directors. The Director of Worship will be encouraged to maintain their own spiritual and physical disciplines, prioritizing one’s own walk with Christ, and one’s own family, over ministry responsibilities.

The Director of Worship will be asked to:

  • Be accessible and responsive to the various ways our staff and parishioners communicate: emails, Microsoft Teams, phone calls, and text messages
  • Be available, with regular office hours, for meetings with parishioners and/or staff
  • Communicate important updates and initiatives with the congregation (through the Truro News and website), and the Vestry (through Vestry reports, when requested)
  • Help maintain a safe environment for the flock of God through a diligent commitment to the prevention of any kind of abuse: sexual, spiritual, or financial

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s in music or theology; or experience equivalent
  • Over 5 years of demonstrated experience and significant responsibility in leading a worship ministry of diverse musical expressions
  • A growing familiarity with the Anglican liturgy and Church-year
  • Comfortable with music software such as Sibellius (or other kinds of notation programs) and MultiTracks (or other kinds of digital stems programs)
  • Able to manage and multitask in a fast paced, dynamic environment
