“Wilson’s Guild” at Christ the King in Poway, CA

“Wilson’s Guild” at Christ the King in Poway, CA

The following story was written by Rev. Eric Zolner from the Diocese of Western Anglican newsletter, Cross and Crown, found here. In the story, he writes about a recently launched ministry that his parish, Christ the King, is test-driving in their local church.

Recently a new ministry was formed at Christ the King in Poway called “Wilson’s Guild,” named for the character in the 90s TV show “Home Improvement.” The charge of the guild is to help people with basic home repair and maintenance jobs, while also  assisting homeowners with advice and guidance on larger projects. We are currently testing the ministry out within our own congregation, but our hope is to eventually be able to offer it to the wider community around Christ the King Church.

Last month a long time parishioner named Jan was involved in a car accident that left her with extensive damage to the front end of her 1999 Buick Park Avenue. Jan didn’t even know if her car was drivable, so she had it towed and a member of the church picked her up and drove her home. Next, Wilson’s Guild members Deb and Rick helped Jan to access her email so that she could file a claim with her insurance company. Given the age of the vehicle, the insurance company offered a very small settlement, so Jan would have been on her own to get it repaired, were it not for the Wilson’s Guild!

With the help of Guild members Jan was able to cancel the insurance claim and find a repair shop in Ramona. John at Sun Valley Body and Paint was willing to do the work for a very reasonable price if parts could be located. Of course, finding parts for a 25-year-old car is no easy task, but Rick was able to locate three 1999 Buick Park Avenues at a salvage yard in Tucson, AZ with no front end damage. The next day, buoyed by the prayers of the CtK community,  Rick and Deb drove to Tucson and picked up two front fenders, a hood, two headlights, a radiator, and an AC condenser. With all of the parts in hand, John got to work restoring Jan’s cherished ride.

Last Friday Jan picked up her car, as good as new. Members of the CtK community gathered together for a thanksgiving picnic to celebrate all that the Lord did through this entire process.

If you would like to call upon the Wilson’s Guild for help, you can do so by contacting Rick Kremer or by filling out a request form, which can be found in the parish hall.
