Archbishop Visits Church

Primates, Bishops, Priests, and Deacons are invited to vest and process at this service. The vesting guidelines are below:

Primates: cope and mitre, red stole

Bishops: rochet and chimere, scarf, hood

Priests: cassock, surplice, tippet (academic hood, optional)

Deacons: alb and red stole

A Note on Vesting: When the Province comes together for worship, Bishops are the celebrants and ministers of Absolution, Communion and Blessing. Canons limit the episcopate to men. Some dioceses ordain women to the priesthood; most do not. The Constitution gives dioceses this freedom, reflecting practice in the wider Anglican world. Honoring our two Provincial integrities in this regard, every priest is free to vest for processions and services in the fashion accorded back home. (We offer this same hospitality to our ecumenical partners.) Nevertheless, the norm for priests is choir habit – cassock, surplice, tippet and hood – since none are functioning sacramentally. Deacons – most dioceses ordain both men and women to this office -- generally vest in alb and stole. We do our best to honor all in these differences, without acting in a way that dishonors the consciences of any.

Investiture: What is an investiture service?

An investiture service formally marks the beginning of the ministry of a new archbishop. Archbishop Beach began functioning with the full authority of the office at the end of Assembly 2014 in June, but this worship service officially acknowledges and celebrates this new ministry.

Childcare: Is childcare available?

Childcare is not available, but there is a cry room and a nursing room attached to the sanctuary.
